South Sudan is a young nation that gained independence from Sudan in 2011. The capital city of Juba has a multitude of cultural phenomena full of markets and art, but the country's rich history is made up of more than just its capital. Despite the optimism and hope that came with becoming an independent country, South Sudan has struggled with political instability, economic challenges, and conflict. Ongoing violence, the displacement of millions of people, and severe food insecurity have forced many South Sudanese to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries. South Sudan has enormous potential with its rich natural resources, diverse population, and strategic location, but much work is needed to address the challenges and build a peaceful, prosperous nation.
