JORDAN…THROUGH THE AGES - NORTH TO SOUTH
March 11 - 28, 2022
Organized by Dr. Barbara A. Porter, Archaeologist and Former Director of ACOR Jordan

Spiekermann Travel, Inc. is hosting the following study program in Jordan in 2022 to be led by Barbara A. Porter, director of ACOR (American Center of Research) in Jordan from 2006 to 2020.  ACOR will be your base in Amman. The ACOR Library contains some 40,000 volumes concerned with Jordan and the region from ancient to modern times and is available to all residents - including program participants - at all times. Group discussions will be fostered on a regular basis and bus time will allow for sharing of information. There will be several scheduled lectures. Spiekermann Travel can arrange trips in the region both before and after the Jordan sojourn and assist with travel arrangements when you book for this study tour through them. Travel arrangements will be worked out in 2022 when the travel industry should resume normal schedules.

ACOR was founded in 1968 and has grown with Amman through the decades. Its permanent headquarters were completed in 1986 and encompass a major research library, conservation labs, and storage space for archaeological material, offices, and a hostel which can house 55 people in peak times as well as the director and associate director’s apartments. The center will be your home away from home. Dinner is served daily by a chef who has worked for ACOR since 1968 and his nephew. Depending on the daily schedule, you will eat at ACOR with the staff and scholars in residence, some of whom will likely provide impromptu lectures on their research. The library of some 40,000 volumes concerned with Jordan and the region from ancient to modern times is available to all residents - including program participants - at all times and a reading shelf for the seminar will be set up with recommended books. Evenings may have a scheduled lecture and planned meal but others will be free and recommendations will be made to various places for those keen to explore on their own or with fellow participants.

Group discussions will be fostered on a regular basis and bus time will allow for sharing of information by ACOR Director Dr. Barbara A. Porter, the organizer of this tour, and Mr. Nasser Abu Al Khair, a well-respected tour guide who has worked with ACOR on numerous programs since 2006. He will accompany us on all excursions and provide many insights into the country and its people. We will ensure that you have the chance to meet with individuals involved in preserving Jordan’s past as well as those involved in current issues.
