About your lecturer...Scholar Bruce Wannell has been traveling for over 40 years through North and East Africa, the Levant, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, Northern India and the Deccan sometimes living in such places for an extended period of time. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Africa, Asia, the Near East and the Islamic world and is a linguist fluent in French, German, Italian as well as Arabic and Persian languages. Mr. Wannell was educated at Wellington College, near Sandhurst in Surrey and at Oriel College, Oxford, in the UK. His background has served him well as he regularly translates and gives lectures related to his field of expertise. He has also worked as a teacher with refugees. Bruce enjoys an eclectic array of pastimes, from gardening to French cuisine and chamber music (piano and harpsichord, accompanying instrumentalists and singers in the classical and Baroque style). We believe he is the perfect companion to accompany you across this rich historical crossroad of civilizations. His engaging, captivating personality and eloquent, narrative style will entertain as he seeks to enlighten you on the interdisciplinary subjects related to the history of the Phoenicians, Romans and the Mediterranean basin.

Meet and assist, transfer to hotel in Beirut. Check in at Ramada Downtown hotel and overnight. (D)
Thursday, Oct 25
Tyre to Sidon - Maghdouche (78 KM)
Breakfast and full day tour to visit the South. First visit to Tyre, visit this magnificent sight including the sanctuary and the Hippodrome. Continue in the afternoon to Saida, town on the coast. Visit of the Sea castle and the souk. On the way back to Beirut short stop at Eschmoun, the Phoenician sight in Lebanon. Lunch during the tour in local restaurant in Tyre then head to Maghdouche visit its Castle and the Al-Saydeh ancient church in Maghdouche. Afterwards return to your hotel for overnight. (B,L,D)

Beirut to Beiteddine & Deir El Kamar (48KM)
The day will start with the visit of the Chouf Mountain. First village is Deir El Qamar, the historic residence of the Governors of Lebanon. Continue to Beiteddine, where a superb Palace stands over the valley, with its typical Lebanese architecture of the 18th and 19th century. Visit the museum, the unique exhibition of mosaics. Proceed to the Moussa Castle, interesting place by the fact that it has been built by one person only in devotion to a promised wife. After lunch in local restaurant in Beiteddine visit of Druze Leader Mr Joumblat Walid in his residence in Moukhtara (after making appointment) and visit Maasser el Chouf, Arc En Ciel. Return to hotel in Beirut for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Cedars to Bcharreh and Kozhaya (124 KM)
Drive north and climb to the Cedars where only some 400 trees remains but some are aging more than 2000 years. Walk through the forest which is today an eco-museum. Continue to Bcharré, village over the Qadisha valley and home town of the Lebanese poet Gebran Khalil Gebran Discover his work at the museum. Besharreh and Kozhaya are famous mainly for their magnificent, excellently preserved sites, such as the Gibran Museum and the Monastery of St Anthony. Afterwards return to your hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Jeita Grottoes to Harissa to Byblos (43 KM)
After breakfast, head to visit The Pigeons Rock, the Coastal Avenue, and then the city center where you will find one of the largest reconstruction project in the World. Visit the National Museum. Continue to visit the Dog River, and the Jeita grotto. The grotto is the slow work of the nature during the past thousand years. Visit of the upper cave on foot which is access by a cable car then to the lower cave which is visited by small boat on the internal lake Via the Coastal highway, after lunch proceed to Harissa, climbing by cable car to the Holy statue of Notre Dame for a view of Jounieh and Beirut. Visit Bkerke and meet with Maronite Partriach after making an appointment. Continue on the northern coast to Byblos, the oldest town in the world continuously inhabited for the last 5000 years. Visit the Citadel, the St John church and the harbor. Afterwards return to your hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

Baalbeck to Ksara to Anjar (125 KM)
Drive across Mount Lebanon then descend towards the Beqaa Valley to reach the world greatest historical sites: Baalbeck. Visit the place with the Temple of Jupiter and Bacchus. Visit the Ksara winery for a taste of the Lebanese production. After lunch proceed to Anjar; the only Omayyad site in Lebanon, recognized to be one of the major market place on the Silk Road. Also visit the farms of Taanayel then return to your hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)
