 | Ethiopia…Land of Mystery - Historic Route &
Timket Festival(Jan'2013) Jan 09 - 24, 2013 Tour Escort: Ethiopian Expert Guide: Mr. Asrat Kahsay
|
| |
Ethiopia is culturally one of the richest countries in Africa and home to some remarkable architectural gems. A journey on the Historic
Route provides a glimpse of life from the past that is still relevant. It is a country where religion plays a prominent role and the
celebration of holy days is a way of life. The Virgin Mary is one of the most venerated of all religious figures in Ethiopia. The Feast of
Hidar Tsion is associated with the presence of the Ark of the Covenant in Axum and the belief that the Ark itself is a symbol of her womb.
This festival is attended by tens of thousands of people from all over Ethiopia, making it one of the most joyous annual pilgrimages in
Axum, the "sacred city of the Ethiopians." You will be an observer at this remarkable event marked by processions of chanting priests and
parishioners dressed in colorful robes with the ubiquitous umbrellas.

Tour Notes: About your guide – Asrat Kahsay was born in the rural town of Adwa, in Tigray province in northern Ethiopia near the border with Eritrea.
He spent his childhood in an agricultural setting: collecting firewood, fetching water, tending herds, animal feed collection, plowing,
sowing seed, weeding and harvesting crops. He attended the local elementary and junior high schools and completed three years of high
school before moving to eastern Ethiopia for his final year, a move necessitated by the border war with Eritrea. He studied at the Maichew
Technical College before deciding to pursue a degree/career in tourism. He served an apprenticeship with one of the more reputable
Ethiopian tour operators, spending time both in the office and in the field and working with some of the better-known tourism companies
around the world. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture, religions, fauna and flora of his country making him one of
the most sought after guides in the country. His attention to detail and ability to converse in several of the local dialects (as well as
English, French and German) contribute to the enjoyment of your tour.
Special notes on Travel to Ethiopia: This is a very poor country and the tourism infrastructure is still lacking in many areas. This trip
requires participants to be in good health. We designed the itinerary to be as comfortable as possible. Elevations could constitute
problems for people with breathing difficulties (some areas are at 7000 ft) and rough, dusty roads could also affect travelers. Finally,
you should be aware that some of the accommodations are considered primitive (though clean and suitable for our kind of adventure), they
are the best available in some of the visited towns, Some of the drives are very long on gravel and dirt roads, so patience, a team
spirit, a sense of adventure and flexibility are all needed traits to enjoy this tour. Also at festival times, hotels can occasionally
oversell and force us to make last minute changes.

On Jordan is a magnificent destination and home of one of the most impressive Wonders of the Ancient World
The fabled city of Petra--a marvel carved from living stone, "Like a fairy-tale city," the great adventurer Gertrude Bell described

In this journey, you will go through the stunning spectrum of Jordanian marvels. In epic Wadi Rum, where Bedouins still roam with their
goat hair tents pitched under infinite desert skies, and where the moon-like formations are still very much as Lawrence of Arabia
encountered them: "vast, echoing and God-like." You will roam the wondrous Roman ruins at Jerash and luxuriate at the Dead Sea, pampered
with soothing mudpacks and spa treatments or, if that seems too energetic, simply float.

offers a multitude of experiences and chance encounters. Tour the world’s oldest inhabited city with its famous antique museums. Visit
monasteries and churches dating from the 2nd to 4th century and the holiest sites of the Yezidis including the cave of the fire
worshippers. Drive through breathtaking views of Kurdistan’s mountains, rivers and waterfalls. Explore former Jewish cities and other
ancient locations such as Amadiya. Shop in the local bazaars for gold, silver, carpets, spices – you name it. From the great walled city

The western region of Central Asia presents a colorful melting pot of peoples and cultures. Since the end of the 2nd millennium nomads

civilizations. From the middle of the 1st millennium BC until the 10th century AD the territories of modern Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and
Tajikistan were integrated into Ancient Iran and later the Silk Road connecting China with Europe was established through this region.
Central Asia was a major center of three great religions: Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Islam. Mosques, mausoleums, madrasas and
traditional souks offer a glimpse of times past.

Situated at the toe of the boot of Italy, Sicily is an archaeological treasure. Sikania to its most ancient peoples, Sicily was Sikelia,
Plato's utopian society, to the ancient Greeks. This small island serves as a museum to the many ancient civilizations that colonized it
throughout the centuries. It is a land where Archimedes taught and Saint Paul preached. It has been ruled by Asians, Africans and
Europeans as it was once a Greek colony, a Roman province, an Arab emirate and a Norman kingdom. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Swabians,
Angevins and Aragonese all left their mark on Sicily. Experience their legacy in Phoenician settlements, Punic cities, Greek temples,
Roman amphitheatres, Norman Arab castles and Aragonese churches. Sunny Sicily is Punic Palermo, towering Taormina, ancient Agrigento,
splendid Siracusa, and medieval Monreale and Cefalù.

 | Journey through Central Asia and Western
China (May'2012) May 12 - June 8, 2012 Tour Escort: Dr. Mathew Canepa, Art History Professor,
University of Minnesota
|
| |
Few landmarks have tantalized the minds of men more than the legendary caravan places of Central Asia. Tucked behind remote barriers of
mountains and deserts, these cities had rarely been visited by travelers from the West. The region had become forbidden to all but
Moslems, and other events kept it closed until recently. No longer inaccessible, one can now travel the length and breadth of the Great
Silk Road and follow in the footsteps of Alexander the Great, Gingiz Khan and Tamerlane. Experience the cultural wealth, hospitable people
and striking scenery of Uzbekistan, Central Asia’s most fascinating country. From the middle of the 1st millennium BC until the 10th
century AD the territory of modern Uzbekistan was integrated into Persia (Iran) and later the Silk Road connecting China with Europe was
established through the region. Mosques, mausoleums, medrassahs, souks and caravan cities offer a glimpse of times past
The Silk Road is the tale of one of the world's oldest and grandest of the trade routes which cast its shadows on the cultures of China,
Central Asia and Western Asia. Whilst the Silk Road started from Xian in China, it was Central Asia that made inroads into different trade
routes. We trace this historical route and see the influence of the Silk Road in the Central Asian countries of Uzbekistan and Western
China

 | The wonders of the Arabian Gulf - An
indepth tour of the Sheikhdoms of Qatar &
the UAE (Nov'2012) Nov 18 - 26, 2012 Tour Escort: Local Guides
|
| |
Best known for being unknown, Qatar has a habit of falling off the outside world's radar screens. Most foreign maps of Arabia drawn before
the 19th century don't show the Qatar peninsula. Not among the worlds prime tourist destinations, it began issuing tourist visas in 1989,
but after a slow start Qatar has begun to reap the benefits of its new openness. Albeit it is not as developed as the tourist centers of
the UAE, Qatar is definitely worth a look and a close exploration of its beautiful museums and souks. The tour of some of the Sheikhdoms
of the UAE cannot be completed without a visit to the marvel of the 21st century: Dubai, an emirate that transformed itself in the last
few decades from an obscure pearl-fishing village into one of the worlds’ most important trade hubs and a land of luxuries.

 | OMO Valley Extension (Dec'2012) This extension is offered in conjunction
with our Ethiopia tour offered in November
(Hidar Tsion) Tour Escort:
|
| |
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO......
The actual itinerary may change to coincide with market days in towns visited.
You must be in good physical condition to participate on this tour. You should not suffer from any respiratory ailment, allergies to dust
or asthma. Some roads are dusty although in the last few years there has been a lot of improvements on the roads. Some drive days are
quite long.
Temperatures in southern Ethiopia can reach in the high 90’s. Vehicles are supposed to be air-conditioned but we cannot guarantee that
they will be. Hotels are not air-conditioned.
There are mosquitoes in this area and it is recommended that you take malaria prophylactic. You should consult your physician or a travel
clinic regarding this matter. Some of the hotels will have mosquito netting, making it hot for sleeping.
If you suffer from back problems be advised that you will be traveling over bad roads for an extended period of time. There are airports
in Arbaminch and Jinka but the flights are not dependable. They are often cancelled or overbooked and since they are only twice weekly you
would experience a considerable delay if you were not able to leave on your scheduled flight.
This is not a wildlife tour. While there is wildlife in the national parks you will probably not see it. This is a populated area and the
animals stay pretty well hidden. Some animals that you may see include baboon, monkey, zebra, dik dik, warthog and gazelle. You can also
expect to see hippo and crocodile on your boat tour.
The purpose of this tour is to visit the various tribes that populate this area. The people and their way of life have pretty much
remained the same as it has been for centuries. No electricity, running water, cell or telephones, televisions, satellite dishes, cars,
etc. Your hotel will have some of these but they are pretty basic. The people themselves are being negatively impacted by tourism. Money
being the key to interacting with them and the competition for your attention is fierce as it has become a business for them.
Tour Includes: * Accommodations as mentioned in the itinerary & Day use room in Addis Ababa on the last day of the tour
* All transfers with assistance and porterage
* All included sightseeing with entrance fees to visited sites
* Fully escorted by an English speaking, native historian/guide & scout services in the National parks
* All meals as specified
* 4 X 4 vehicles for touring outside of Addis Ababa & boat trip on Lake Chamo
* 2 bottles of water each day and a soft drink or sparkling water with lunch and dinner
* Local guides, local helpers and national park scouts
Not Included: * Any airline tickets or airline taxes & Security charges
* Meals not mentioned
* Items of a personal nature: beverages, laundry, phone calls, email, souvenirs, camera fees at sites, etc.
* Visa for Ethiopia which must be obtained ahead of time
* Tips to guide and driver and scouts
* Air from your home city to Addis Ababa
* Dayroom or hotel overnights if necessary due to airline schedule changes
Tour Notes: Price per Person is: $2,050.00 (2 people - 1 vehicle) $1,705.00 (3 people - 1 vehicle)

**The above prices are based on double occupancy, with minimum of 2 people participating.

The prodigious ruins of some of the civilizations that ruled the Ancient Near East: the Hittites, Neo-Hittites and Urartians lie in
Turkey’s Eastern regions bordering Armenia, Georgia, Iraq, Iran and Syria. This seldom-visited region offers travelers the most stupendous
sights of the Middle East. See the magnificent carvings on the Armenian Church on Akdamar Island in Lake Van and the samples of cuneiform
inscriptions on Ottoman ruins in Tuspa. Tour ghostly-ruined cathedrals and churches at Ani and the stunningly situated Ishak Pasha Palace,
the Taj Mahal of Turkey. Explore the Biblical connections of Urfa and Harran (where Abraham once lived), and Mount Ararat, claimed to be
the final resting place of Noah’s Ark. This itinerary is the perfect complement to the tour of Kurdistan.

University. Holding a doctorate from Cambridge University, he specializes in the interplay of religion and culture, especially on the
cultural fault lines where religions meet and national identities are shaped by religious allegiances, as in Anatolia, Persia and the
Caucasus region. He teaches the history of Christianity, and his publications, focusing on the early modern world, include work on the
relations between Christianity and Islam.

Tour Notes: ** Single Supplement: $525.00
** Minimum 6 participants and maximum 14 participants
***Trip Grade: Moderately Vigorous Touring - You will be covering a lot during this journey. The roads are good and the bus very
comfortable. Some driving days are long. There will be several restroom stops along the way, some in primitive Turkish-style toilets. It
is important to recognize the exhausting nature of some of the long sightseeing days as well as some of the site visits where you may have
to climb on uneven terrain, steps, rocks and sand as well as up inclines and stairs. Some of the sites involve more strenuous walking
(uphill on uneven ground) in order to view the sights. Not easily done if you are not in good physical condition. Be prepared with
comfortable shoes. You do have the option of staying with the vehicle if some sites seem difficult for you.

 | Saudi Arabia... The Forbidden Kingdom
(Nov'2012) November 04 – 18, 2012 Tour Escort: Professor Denise Schmandt-Besserat, the
University of Texas at Austin
|
| |
Though people of various cultures have lived on the Arabian Peninsula over a span of more than 5,000 years, the harsh climate historically
prevented much settlement, except for a few major cities and oases. Most of the empires of the ancient world traded with the states that
existed on the peninsula, which lay along important trade routes. Najran in the south, where mud-brick forts dot the palm oases is one of
the ancient caravan stops that you will be visiting. The country’s main attraction and its hidden treasure is the UNESCO World Heritage
site of Madain Saleh. It is considered second only to the famous Petra in Jordan in terms of Nabatean architectural remains. Colorful
markets, desert landscapes, coral reefs, rock engravings, ancient monuments, the country has much to offer to those who choose to venture
in.
$7,195.00 Per person sharing in double with
airfare from NYC |
THE FINE PRINT...Saudi Arabia is a dry country. Alcohol is absolutely forbidden (as are narcotics and pornographic materials). Dress is
modest and women must cover their heads and wear black abayas at all times (which will be provided by the agency in Saudi Arabia). Be
advised that you will be fingerprinted and undergo a retinal scan upon arrival in the country. We strongly urge you to read the State
Department Warnings before signing up and payment of your deposit confirms your understanding of the circumstances regarding travel to
Saudi Arabia. Also be aware that everything in the Kingdom shuts down between noon and 4 pm every day as well as several other times
during prayers and often the group will be returned to the hotel for some free time during these periods. In addition, sometimes sites can
be closed for no foreseen reasons or authorities can also deny visit of certain places without prior notice and we (STS) are not
responsible for any such events/acts.

collections in all the major museums of the Middle East, Europe and the USA. She is the author of When Writing Met Art (2007), Before
Writing (1992) and How Writing Came About (1996), which was selected by American Scientist magazine as “one of the 100 books that shaped
science in the 20th century”. Her work on the origins of writing and mathematics has been covered by Scientific American, Time, Life, the
New York Times, and the Washington Post. She has appeared in television programs such as Out of the Past (Discovery Channel), the Nature

 | Ethiopia…Land of Mystery - Historic Route
and Hidar Tsion Festival(Nov'2012) Nov 23 - Dec 09, 2012 Tour Escort: Ethiopian Expert Guide: Mr.
|
| |
Air & land from Washington DC $5,995.00 per
person sharing in double occupancy |
***About your guide – Asrat Kahsay was born in the rural town of Adwa, in Tigray province in northern Ethiopia near the border with
Eritrea. He spent his childhood in an agricultural setting: collecting firewood, fetching water, tending herds, animal feed collection,
plowing, sowing seed, weeding and harvesting crops. He attended the local elementary and junior high schools and completed three years of
high school before moving to eastern Ethiopia for his final year, a move necessitated by the border war with Eritrea. He studied at the
Maichew Technical College before deciding to pursue a degree/career in tourism.
***Special notes on Travel to Ethiopia: This is a very poor country and the tourism infrastructure is still lacking in many areas. This
trip requires participants to be in good health.
Tour Includes: o Roundtrip International air from Dulles to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airline (air credit if not using Ethiopian Airline is $1000)
o All internal flights within Ethiopia

Libya is a country of stark contrasts offering visitors an opportunity to view, not only some of the greatest Roman and Greek cities in
the world, but also the magnificent views and vistas of the Sahara desert. On Libya’s western Mediterranean coast, stand the breathtaking
Roman cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna, “both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.” Further east, in the beautiful area of ancient Cyrenaica
and the Green Mountains are the wonderfully preserved Greek remains of Cyrene “another World Heritage Site,” Ptolemais and Apollonia. You
will explore those great classical cities and stroll their streets as well as view the fines pieces displayed in many of their small but
interesting museums. Your adventure will also take you to the ancient caravan city of Ghadames with its labyrinth of alleys and maze of
living quarters, another spectacular World Heritage Site.

Tour Notes: *** THE FINE PRINT: Currently the only remaining important information we need to verify for bookings on this tour is pertaining to the
visas. We have not yet received final word on the process and its requirements and as soon as the transitional government notifies their
consulate in DC on the procedure, we will alert you. Libya is fast trying to re-establish its tourism industry after it has been suspended
during the last year as a consequence of the revolution and the war. We understand that most of the establishments are still in a very
good shape and needed just some cosmetic repairs and that all historical sites are intact.
Please note that Libya is a dry country though one can find non-alcoholic beer. A flexible spirit is required to join the tour.
