rivers of the world. It marks an approximate boundary between the Sahara
desert and the Sahel. Mali means hippo in one of the local languages and they
can sometimes be seen during the dry season. Head to Timbuktu the city of
legend that truly exists on the fringes of the Sahara Desert. Visit its
ancient mosque as well as the Grand Mosque in Djenne, the largest mud-brick
building in the world. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Stroll through
the weekly markets in Djenne and Mopti, known to attract thousands of people
from Mali’s many tribes. Spend time in Dogon country home to one of the most
fascinating tribes in Africa. End your tour at the River Niger Festival, a
celebration of music, dancing and culture
Land ONLY: $5,495.00 Per person sharing in

The Fine Print
The following is some pertinent information regarding services and conditions that may help you decide if this trip is right for you. Mali
is a relatively poor country and you should not expect the standard of accommodations to be similar to the more popular tourist
destinations in Africa. Rooms and facilities may be rustic. Vehicles may be a bit “tired” and the air conditioning may not function. Food
can be somewhat bland. You will be doing some exploring on foot so you should be in good physical condition in order to participate on
this tour and have appropriate footwear. Be advised that temperatures can be quite hot at this time of year. Dust levels are high and can
cause complications for people with asthma or respiratory problems. Begging can become annoying in some places. We highly urge you not to
give money as it will encourage this practice.
*Departure date from US may differ depending on airline chosen or the addition of the pre-tour to Morocco.

 | Ethiopia…Land of Mystery
Historic Route and Hidar Tsion Festival
November 22-December 07, 2009 Tour Escort: Native Expert Guide Mr. Asrat Kahsay
|
| |
Ethiopia is culturally one of the richest countries in Africa and home to some
remarkable architectural gems. A journey on the Historic Route provides a
glimpse of life from the past that is still relevant. It is a country where
religion plays a prominent role and the celebration of holy days is a way of
life. The Virgin Mary is one of the most venerated of all religious figures in
Ethiopia. The Feast of Hidar Tsion is associated with the presence of the Ark
of the Covenant in Axum and the belief that the Ark itself is a symbol of her
womb. This festival is attended by tens of thousands of people from all over
Ethiopia, making it one of the most joyous annual pilgrimages in Axum,
the "sacred city of the Ethiopians." You will be an observer at this
remarkable event marked by processions of chanting priests and parishioners
dressed in colorful robes with the ubiquitous umbrellas.
Air and land from Washington DC: $5,700.00
Per person sharing in double occupancy |
About your guide – Asrat Kahsay was born in the rural town of Adwa, in Tigray

harvesting crops. He attended the local elementary and junior high schools and
completed three years of high school before moving to eastern Ethiopia for his
final year, a move necessitated by the border war with Eritrea. He studied at
the Maichew Technical College before deciding to pursue a degree/career in
tourism. He served an apprenticeship with one of the more reputable Ethiopian
tour operators, spending time both in the office and in the field and working
with some of the better-known tourism companies around the world. He is

Ancient Rome extended its control over a vast empire around the Mediterranean Sea, but Algeria and Tunisia are both considered the gems of
Rome in Africa. The spectacular sites you will visit during this special tour that combines both countries are awe-inspiring. Algeria is a
vast country of breathtaking scenery, well-preserved Roman ruins, and a strong Arabic culture, while Tunisia is home to some beautiful
desert which houses many desolate Roman sites and is a more westernized nation that still merges in an elegant manner French and Arabic
cultures. Your journey will take you from the sweeping shoreline to the majestic mountains, through the wilderness of the Sahara desert
into palm-fringed oases. This fascinating tour offers the adventurous traveler an alluring blend of art, history, culture and scenery
while concentrating on exploring the major Roman ruins of North Africa.

You will be covering great distances by road during this journey. The roads are very good and the weather at that time of the year is
comfortable. You will be served cold water, tea and fruits along the way. You will make several rest stops (most will be in the beautiful
wilderness). It is important to recognize the exhausting nature of the long driving days as well as some of the site visits where you
might have to climb on uneven terrain and walk for several hours. Also, it is our responsibility to inform you that despite the immense
progress in the standard of accommodations over the last years in Algeria, you might still encounter minor annoyances, such as leaky
plumbing fixtures, hot water interruptions in hotels, especially in remote towns and villages. This will necessitate a flexible, tolerant
attitude and a sense of humor.

 | Egypt’s Secret Sites and Hidden Treasures October 10 to 26, 2009 Tour Escort: Dr. Thomas F. Mudloff, Egyptologist
|
| |
Professor Mudloff has designed this trip for the repeat traveler to Egypt. His
program offers a more in-depth exploration of the Egyptian Nile than virtually
any Egypt itinerary in operation. It is an adventure to seldom-visited places,
some of them well off the beaten path. As mentioned, some of the areas are not
usually included even though they are well known (Armana) as they are
difficult to get to. Other sites require special permission to enter and our
operator in Egypt is busy trying to secure permission from Dr. Zahi Hawas,
Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities to visit some of the
sites that are currently closed to the public. Some of these include Behbeit
El-Hagar the Sanctuary of Isis, Khatana the capital city of the Hyksos, the
Pyramid of Djedefre at Abu Rawash, the Tombs of Horemheb, Amenhotep III and
Seti I in the Valley of the Kings, Heraconpolis in Nekheb, Tell El-Farain, an
important area dating back to pre-dynastic times and El-Badari where some of
the earliest evidence of Egyptian civilization has been recovered. Of course,
you will tour the National Museum for a comprehensive overview of its vast
collections and leisure time has been included for those wishing to revisit an
old favorite – the pyramids? Karnak Complex?

Welcome to Iraqi-Kurdistan!
The people of Iraqi-Kurdistan invite you to discover their peaceful region, a place that has practiced democracy for over a decade, a
place where the universities, markets, cafes and fair grounds buzz with progress and prosperity and where the people are already sowing
the seeds of a brighter future.
Who are the Kurds?
There is a saying among the Kurds: “No friends but the mountains.” For, indeed, the world has scarcely noticed when century after century,
conqueror after conqueror has driven these once nomadic tribes deep within their beloved mountains to preserve their culture, their
language and their lives.
Hidden in the shadows of history, resistance against repression became the Kurdish way of life, until atrocities inflicted by a dictator
named Saddam Hussein sent shock waves throughout the world causing people of ever nation to ask, “Who are the Kurds?”
A different Mind-Set
“We are neither Arabs, nor Turks, and not Persians. We are Muslims, but we are a different nation. We have our own language, our own
history, and our own folklore, and everything.” DR. Ali Saeed Mohammad, King Fahd University.
“The fact that we Kurds are a completely different ethnic group than the Arabs and the Turks and even the Persians…because of that
background and also because of all of the suffering they have seen, they have a completely different mindset.” Jano Rosebiani, award
winning writer, producer, and director.
“At the time when the central Iraqi regime - before the toppling of Saddam Hussein, was busy with creating weapons of mass destruction, we
were busy planting trees and creating new classes at our universities and opening new departments and building centers of education for
our children and for our youth.” Professor Nazar Amin, Sulaimani University.
We are trying to build a nation. We are trying to improve the scientific standards of our community. We are trying to spread democracy. We
are trying to teach the people how to respect each other and accept the rights of children and women in general.
“This country is a peaceful country. The people are very, very lovely. I don’t think that our region will be a dam between us and other
countries and other cultures.” Nehad Latif Qocha.
The Kurds are an ancient people who’ve lived their entire lives at the crossroads of the world, accustomed to living with people of many
different religions. Today, as in the days of old, you will find in the hearts of the Kurdish people ethnic and religious tolerance.
“Today, for instance, in Kurdistan you see churches beside mosques in the Kurdish cities. We have Christians, we have Armenians, we have
Yezidies, we have Muslims, we have Jews. We have all types of religions and ethnic groups and we’ve been living together for ages and that
shows how tolerant the Kurdish people are.” Jano Rosebiani, award winning writer, producer, and director.
In the cities of Kurdistan you will see, not only Kurds, but Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians, Armenians, Chaldeans, Shia, Sunni…all living
peacefully side by side because this is who they are. This is how Kurdistan has always been, long before the country of Iraq ever existed.

 | SAUDI ARABIA ... THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM October 31 to November 15, 2009 Tour Escort: Professor Denise Schmandt-Besserat, the
University of Texas at Austin
|
| |
Though people of various cultures have lived on the Arabian Peninsula over a span of more than 5,000 years, the harsh climate historically
prevented much settlement, except for a few major cities and oases. Most of the empires of the ancient world traded with the states that
existed on the peninsula, which lay along important trade routes. Najran in the south, where mud-brick forts dot the palm oases is one of
the ancient caravan stops that you will be visiting. The country’s main attraction and its hidden treasure is the UNESCO World Heritage
site of Madain Saleh. It is considered second only to the famous Petra in Jordan in terms of Nabataean architectural remains. You will
also spend a few days in Bahrain before returning home. Colorful markets, desert landscapes, coral reefs, rock engravings, ancient
monuments, the countries have much to offer to those who choose to venture in.

advised that you will be fingerprinted and undergo a retinal scan upon arrival in the country. We strongly urge you to read the State
Department Warnings before signing up and payment of your deposit confirms your understanding of the circumstances regarding travel to

Tajikistan were integrated into Ancient Iran and later the Silk Road connecting China with Europe was established through this region.
Central Asia was a major center of three great religions: Zoroastrianism. Buddhism, and Islam. Mosques, mausoleums, madrasas and
