 | SENEGAL and MAURITANIA February 05 to 22, 2011 Tour Escort: Escorted By Mr. Mohamed Halouani, Lecturer
and expert on Islamic architecture and West
African cultures
|
| |
Travel through two of West Africa’s jewels, Senegal and Mauritania, both of which offer a variety of exotic opportunities. From the wide-
open savannas in the north, to the deep lush forests of the south and the golden sand beaches scattered along the turquoise waters of the
Atlantic Ocean, Senegal has something to appeal to everyone. The country’s cultural heritage is a unique blend of Muslim and Francophone
influences. Just off the coast is Goree Island with its roots deeply planted in the sad history of the slave trade. As for Mauritania, it
boasts many wonders of nature as well as ancient cities. In the Middle Ages, it was was the seat of the Almoravid movement that spread
Islam throughout North Africa. Today the seventh holiest city of Islam, Chinguitty, is located in the north of the country. Also in the
north is Ouad Esne, an oasis settlement concealed by waves of golden sand dunes. It is home to an ancient mosque that contains 3,000
manuscripts, justifying its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The country’s colorful, nomadic Moorish population can be found in old
cities such as Tichitt. Touring the region offers a glimpse into a rich past, that includes the Trans-Saharan trade route that moved goods
via camel caravan between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. For more than 500 years the Almoravid Dynasty controlled the trade in gold,
slaves and salt until their defeat by the Arabs in the late 1600’s. Not long afterwards the arrival of the Europeans on the coast of
Africa gradually diverted commerce to trading posts thus causing the decline and eventual ruin of these cities

The following is some pertinent information regarding services and conditions that may help you decide if this trip is right for you. You
should not expect the standard of accommodations in Senegal and Mauritania to be similar to the more popular tourist destinations in
Africa. Rooms and facilities may be rustic. Vehicles may be a bit “tired” and the air conditioning may not function. Food can be somewhat
bland. You will be doing some exploring on foot so you should be in good physical condition in order to participate on this tour and have
appropriate footwear. Be advised that temperatures can be quite hot at this time of year. Dust levels are high and can cause complications
for people with asthma or respiratory problems. Begging can become annoying in some places. We highly urge you not to give money as it
will encourage this practice. Vaccines are required for this tour and you should contact the CDC. *Those wishing to extend their Mali tour
to visit Senegal and Mauritania will arrive in Dakar on February 06. **VERY IMPORTANT - The preferred hotels in St Louis and Chinguetti
are shared bathrooms (in separate building) only. No ensuite rooms exist at this time. If this changes we will upgrade

 | LIBYA...SANDS OF TIME October 30-Nov.14, 2010 Tour Escort: Lecturer and Roman history & archaeology
expert Mr. Mohamed Halouani
|
| |
After several years of waiting for the moment when Libya would reopen its doors to American tourist we are pleased to announce that that
time has finally come and we at Spiekermann Travel are ready to resume our travel program to this fascinating country. Visas that had been
denied to American travelers or proffered at an exorbitant cost are now available upon arrival at the airport in Tripoli for a nominal fee.
We at STS began promoting Libya when rumors of the sanctions being lifted began and introduced our travel program as soon as it became a
reality in March 2003. At that time we offered tours to a few hundred lucky travelers that were able to discover the treasures that had
been denied for so many years. All of it came to a halt in the 2005/2006 season disappointing many. The opportunity is now once again
available and we would recommend that you act quickly as future access to Libya is...unpredictable!
Libya is a country of stark contrasts. Visitors will have an opportunity to tour not only some of the greatest Roman and Greek cities in
the world, but also to venture into the Sahara desert. On the west coast of the Mediterranean stand the breathtaking Roman cities of
Sabratha and Leptis Magna, two jewels set in an unparalleled location overlooking the blue waters of the Mediterranean. While further
east, in ancient Cyrenaica are the wonderfully preserved Greek remains of Cyrene, Ptolemais and Apollonia. One cannot help but be
impressed by the grandeur of these majestic undertakings. Explore these great classical cities, stroll along their streets and gaze upon
the remnants of agoras, baths and temples. Visit their small but interesting museums to view the fine pieces displayed, most recovered
from the sites. Venture into the fringe area of the Sahara to the oasis of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stopping along the way
to visit some of the most picturesque berber villages of North Africa.

Ethiopia is culturally one of the richest countries in Africa and home to some

religion plays a prominent role and the celebration of holy days is a way of
life. The Virgin Mary is one of the most venerated of all religious figures in
Ethiopia. The Feast of Hidar Tsion is associated with the presence of the Ark
of the Covenant in Axum and the belief that the Ark itself is a symbol of her
womb. This festival is attended by tens of thousands of people from all over
Ethiopia, making it one of the most joyous annual pilgrimages in Axum,
the "sacred city of the Ethiopians." You will be an observer at this

completed three years of high school before moving to eastern Ethiopia for his
final year, a move necessitated by the border war with Eritrea. He studied at

period and extends into the modern era. Many feel that the source of the civilization of the Nile Valley has its roots in the area that we
now call Libya and evidence may indicate that the Nile Delta area was ruled early on by Libyan tribes. It is a fact that for a time during
the Third Intermediate Period, Pharaonic Egypt was ruled by Libyan kings and the Libyans themselves can be seen throughout history as
components of the Egyptian civilization or antagonists of it! As an Egyptologist with almost 30 years of experience, Dr. Mudloff will pull
the connecting evidence together to show the unique character of this entire region. His background in Biblical Studies and Egyptology

Welcome to Iraqi-Kurdistan!
The people of Iraqi-Kurdistan invite you to discover their peaceful region, a place that has practiced democracy for over a decade, a
place where the universities, markets, cafes and fair grounds buzz with progress and prosperity and where the people are already sowing
the seeds of a brighter future.
Who are the Kurds?
There is a saying among the Kurds: “No friends but the mountains.” For, indeed, the world has scarcely noticed when century after century,
conqueror after conqueror has driven these once nomadic tribes deep within their beloved mountains to preserve their culture, their
language and their lives.
Hidden in the shadows of history, resistance against repression became the Kurdish way of life, until atrocities inflicted by a dictator
named Saddam Hussein sent shock waves throughout the world causing people of ever nation to ask, “Who are the Kurds?”
A different Mind-Set
“We are neither Arabs, nor Turks, and not Persians. We are Muslims, but we are a different nation. We have our own language, our own
history, and our own folklore, and everything.” DR. Ali Saeed Mohammad, King Fahd University.
“The fact that we Kurds are a completely different ethnic group than the Arabs and the Turks and even the Persians…because of that
background and also because of all of the suffering they have seen, they have a completely different mindset.” Jano Rosebiani, award
winning writer, producer, and director.
“At the time when the central Iraqi regime - before the toppling of Saddam Hussein, was busy with creating weapons of mass destruction, we
were busy planting trees and creating new classes at our universities and opening new departments and building centers of education for
our children and for our youth.” Professor Nazar Amin, Sulaimani University.
We are trying to build a nation. We are trying to improve the scientific standards of our community. We are trying to spread democracy. We
are trying to teach the people how to respect each other and accept the rights of children and women in general.
“This country is a peaceful country. The people are very, very lovely. I don’t think that our region will be a dam between us and other
countries and other cultures.” Nehad Latif Qocha.
The Kurds are an ancient people who’ve lived their entire lives at the crossroads of the world, accustomed to living with people of many
different religions. Today, as in the days of old, you will find in the hearts of the Kurdish people ethnic and religious tolerance.
“Today, for instance, in Kurdistan you see churches beside mosques in the Kurdish cities. We have Christians, we have Armenians, we have
Yezidies, we have Muslims, we have Jews. We have all types of religions and ethnic groups and we’ve been living together for ages and that
shows how tolerant the Kurdish people are.” Jano Rosebiani, award winning writer, producer, and director.
In the cities of Kurdistan you will see, not only Kurds, but Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians, Armenians, Chaldeans, Shia, Sunni…all living
peacefully side by side because this is who they are. This is how Kurdistan has always been, long before the country of Iraq ever existed.

 | Ethiopia…Land of Mystery
Historic Route and Timket Festival
January 13 - 26, 2011 Tour Escort: Native Expert Guide Mr. Asrat Kahsay
|
| |
Ethiopia is culturally one of the richest countries in Africa and home to some remarkable architectural gems. A journey on the Historic
Route provides a glimpse of life from the past that is still relevant. It is a country where religion plays a prominent role and the
celebration of holy days is a way of life. The Virgin Mary is one of the most venerated of all religious figures in Ethiopia. The Feast of
Hidar Tsion is associated with the presence of the Ark of the Covenant in Axum and the belief that the Ark itself is a symbol of her womb.
This festival is attended by tens of thousands of people from all over Ethiopia, making it one of the most joyous annual pilgrimages in
Axum, the "sacred city of the Ethiopians." You will be an observer at this remarkable event marked by processions of chanting priests and
parishioners dressed in colorful robes with the ubiquitous umbrellas.
$3,995.00 Per person sharing in double
occupancy with air from Dulles airport,
DC |
About your guide – Asrat Kahsay was born in the rural town of Adwa, in Tigray province in northern Ethiopia near the border with Eritrea.
He spent his childhood in an agricultural setting: collecting firewood, fetching water, tending herds, animal feed collection, plowing,
sowing seed, weeding and harvesting crops. He attended the local elementary and junior high schools and completed three years of high
school before moving to eastern Ethiopia for his final year, a move necessitated by the border war with Eritrea. He studied at the Maichew
Technical College before deciding to pursue a degree/career in tourism. He served an apprenticeship with one of the more reputable
Ethiopian tour operators, spending time both in the office and in the field and working with some of the better-known tourism companies
around the world. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture, religions, fauna and flora of his country making him one of
the most sought after guides in Ethiopia. His attention to detail and ability to converse in several of the local dialects (as well as
English, French and German) contribute to the enjoyment of your tour.
Tour Includes: • International airfare from Dulles airport (flight makes a refueling stop in Rome both ways); Air credit for not flying with group
is $800.00

Hidar Tsion Festival (Celebration of St. Mary),
The Virgin is one of the most venerated of all religious figures in Ethiopia.
About 33 days are annually dedicated to different celebrations in the commemoration of Mary. "Hidar Zion" is associated with the presence
of the Ark of the Covenant in Axum and the belief that the Ark itself is a symbolism to Her womb.
This festival is attended by tens of thousands of people from all over Ethiopia, making it one of the most joyous annual pilgrimages in
Axum, the "sacred city of the Ethiopians." The festival is a remarkable event marked by stunning colorful robes, umbrellas and fascinating
processions and beautiful chanting.
This is a very poor country and the tourism infrastructure is still lacking in many areas. This trip requires participants to be in good
health. We designed the itinerary to be as comfortable as possible. Elevations could constitute problems for people with breathing
difficulties and rough, dusty roads could also affect travelers. Most roads are in good condition but some of the drives are very long on
gravel and dirt roads.

|
| |
One hundred years have passed since the first steamers plied the Nile to Wadi Halfa, passing the First Cataract at Aswan and entering the
region called Nubia. In the past century this ancient land has witnessed two of the greatest engineering feats in modern history – the
construction of the Aswan High Dam with the consequent creation of Lake Nasser, and the UNESCO project that saved most of the temples of
Nubia by moving them to higher ground. Even the connoisseur of Egypt will delight in the virgin landscapes of the “New Nubia”, and the
striking spectacle of the vast expanse of sweet blue water lapping the shores of the ochre and gold desert, pure beauty crowned by the
presence of majestic temples. Experience the wonders of this ancient and mysterious land. Discover magnificent monuments, tombs, temples
and the remnants of an ancient civilization that built these testaments to their gods. In Aswan you will board a ship that will take you
through the region called Nubia to explore its seldom-visited treasures. Of course included are also the two majestic temples of Abu

|

Venture into the fringe area of the Sahara to the oasis of Ghadames, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stopping along the way
to visit some of the most picturesque berber villages of North Africa.

is a relatively poor country and you should not expect the standard of accommodations to be similar to the more popular tourist
destinations in Africa. Rooms and facilities may be rustic. Vehicles may be a bit “tired” and the air conditioning may not function. Food
can be somewhat bland. You will be doing some exploring on foot so you should be in good physical condition in order to participate on
this tour and have appropriate footwear. Be advised that temperatures can be quite hot at this time of year. Dust levels are high and can
cause complications for people with asthma or respiratory problems. Begging can become annoying in some places. We highly urge you not to
give money as it will encourage this practice.
