Basic Jordan Itinerary
Day 1 Wednesday
Meet at Sheikh Hussein Bridge in the north or at the Syrian border with
assistance with Jordanian immigration and customs formalities or join this
tour in Amman. Drive to Jerash (Gerasa of antiquity), the best preserved city
from Roman times, to visit its theaters, temples, churches and colonnaded
streets. Continueto Ajloun to tour the 12th century Saracen Castle built by
one of Saladin's lieutenants in the campaign against the Crusaders. Overnight
in Amman.
Day 2 Thursday
Head south along the Kings' highway to Petra, stopping in Madaba to view the
oldest map of the Holy Land, and visit its Mosaic School. Continue to Mt.
Nebo, the alleged burial site of Moses overlooking the Dead Sea and the Jordan
Valley. Then drive through the magnificent scenery of Wadi Mujib to Kerak to
visit the Crusader Castle (stop for optional lunch). Overnight in Petra.
Day 3 Friday
Enjoy a full day exploring the many sites of Petra, the city that was carved
into the rose red Sharah Mountains by the Nabateans and was lost to
civilization until it was rediscovered by the Swiss, Burkhardt. Walk through
the Siq, a narrow and winding fissure between the cliffs, to reach the
Treasury, the Roman Theater, the Courts, Qsar Bint Pharaoun, the Temple of the
Winged Lion and other monuments. A break for optional lunch, or you may wish
to climb up to the Monastery. Overnight in Petra.
Day 4 Saturday
Visit the Wadi Rum Desert (in a 4X4 vehicle) and its awesome moon-like
landscape, where the film "Lawrence of Arabia" was shot. Continue to
the Araba Crossing where you will be assited with departure formalities, or to
Aqaba for a day or two at the beach.
