past that is still located in its original location. The site is not open to
visitors but you will have good views of the citadel from the deck of the
ship. Continue sailing towards Abu Simbel, the jewel in the Nubian crown. The
first glimpses as you approach this most impressive site are breathtaking.
Contain your excitement just a bit longer as you have lunch before your
afternoon tour. Visit the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel built by Ramesses
II to dominate ancient Nubia. The smaller temple is dedicated to Nefertari,
his favorite wife in the guise of the goddess Hathor. Its dedication to a
royal wife makes it unique in the annals of Egyptian architecture. The temple
of Ramesses II is spectacular in majesty and design. The façade is dominated
by four giant colossi. All were moved when the High Dam at Aswan was built to
avoid being covered by Lake Nasser. Return to the ship for a candlelit dinner
(weather permitting) with the temples as a backdrop. (B,L,D)
