Roman Africa...Algeria and Tunisia Itinerary

October 16-17 USA to ALGIERS
Depart New York or Newark for Europe, connecting to Algiers. On arrival, after
passing formalities, transfer to the historic and elegant St George Hotel or
similar.

October 18 ALGIERS
Spend the day exploring the city including the famous Kasbah with its narrow
winding alleys, its medieval houses and courtyards. Continue to the Museum of
Popular Arts, the Botanical Gardens, the Monument of the FLN and the Bardo
Museum. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D).

October 19 CHERCHELL and TIPAZA
Today an English speaking Algerian guide will join you for a full day of
exploration. Begin in Cherchell, the former Roman port of Caesarea, where you
will visit the Theater, Stadium and Museum. After lunch you will head to
Tipaza to tour the Roman ruins. Return to Algiers stopping en route to view
the Mausoleum of Mauretania (Tomb of the Christian). (B,L,D)

October 20 SETIF and DJEMILA
This morning you will drive to Setif to visit its fantastic museum and its
unique collections. After lunch, continue to the Roman site of Djemila,
possibly the most outstanding site in Algeria. End your day at the town of El
Eulma for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

October 21 CONSTANTINE and TIMGAD
Drive to the ancient city of Constantine for a tour of the exterior of the
Great Mosque and to view the spectacular Gorge of Sidi M’cid. Visit the Cirta
Museum and the Mausoleum of Massinissa. Have lunch before continuing to Batna
to visit the spectacular well-preserved Roman site of Timgad. (B,L,D)

October 22 BATNA and TEBESSA
Depart early for Tebessa, to tour its sites and the Arch of Emperor Caracalla.
Take some time enjoying a picnic Lunch. A visit may be arranged to the site of
Lambaesis near Batna, which was the camp of the 3rd Augustan legion which
houses some very interesting mosaics at its local museum. Return to hotel for
dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

October 23 GUELMA and ANNABA
Today you will visit the Roman sites of Madaure and Khamisa. After lunch
continue to Guelma to explore the outstanding Roman Theatre. Continue to
Annaba for dinner and overnight at a local hotel (B,L,D)

October 24 ANNABA to AIN DRAHAM
After breakfast you will visit the site of Hippo Regius, with its Agora,
Basilica and Museum. The church of St. Augustine is built on the site of the
ancient Roman theatre. Proceed to the Tunisian border and following the land
crossing formalities, continue to Ain Draham. Dinner and overnight at a local
hotel. (B,L,D)

October 25 CHEMTOU and BULLA REGIA
This morning visit Chemtou on the Mejerda River to learn about the important
marble quarries in the well-displayed new museum site. Continue to the ruins
of Bulla Regia, a site occupied since pre-Phoenician times but best known for
its underground Roman villas and well-preserved mosaics. Proceed to Teboursouk
for dinner and overnight. (B,L,D)

October 26 DOUGGA and SBEITLA
Historic archaeology dominates the day as you contemplate the ruins of Dougga,
a foremost Roman site. After lunch, head south to the ruins of Sbeitla
(ancient Sufetula), considered to be one of the largest Roman sites in
Tunisia. Overnight in Sbeitla, at Hotel Sufetula, which overlooks this
archaeological treasure. (B,L,D)

October 27 KAIROUAN and SOUSSE
Depart Sbeitla to spend the morning in Kairouan, once the Arab capital for all
of North Africa and still one of Islam’s most sacred sites. In the old city
you will find the great mosque, the oldest religious monument still in use in
North Africa, and the Barber’s mausoleum with superb Andalusian décor. Have
lunch in Kairouan, before continuing to Sousse to visit the museum with its
fine collection of mosaics. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Diar El Andalous in
Sousse. (B,L,D)

October 28 MONASTIR and EL DJEM
Depart this morning to visit Monastir, the city that houses Ribat, one of the
best preserved Arab forts. Visit its museum and view the wonderful collection
of Islamic manuscripts. After lunch, proceed to the gem of Tunisian ruins: the
well-preserved El Djem Roman Amphitheater. Drive back to Sousse for dinner and
overnight at your hotel. (B,L,D)

October 29 CARTHAGE to TUNIS
Continue to Carthage to visit another fine archaeological museum on the Byrsa
Hill. After lunch tour the circular harbor, the Punic ship sheds and burial
ground, before visiting the picturesque 17th century village of Sidi Bou Said.
The dazzling blue and white colors will remind you of the Greek Islands. Head
to the Hotel Africa or similar in Tunis to overnight. (B,L,D)

October 30 TUNIS
Begin your day with a visit to the Bardo Museum, which is world renowned for
its Roman and Byzantine mosaics. Continue after lunch to explore the famous
medina with its palaces and Moorish architecture, centuries old mosques and
bazaars. Enjoy a farewell dinner with entertainment in a local restaurant.
Return to the hotel for your last night in country. (B,L,D)

October 31 TUNIS to the US
Depart for the airport and your flight back to the US with connecting flights
through Europe to your hometown, arriving same day. (B)
